Hill South of Wolfsville Road

This hiker is pausing while ascending the hill south of Wolfsville Road. Note that it does look a bit rocky, but the hiker has not yet reached the most extreme rockiness.
Is this actually a trail? In fact this is the Appalachian Trail, and that rockiness is not just on the ascent of the hill, but continues even worse when the trail follows the plateau at the top.
Just to the west of the trail and roughly parallel to it there is a rock slide that slides both north and south of the summit. Here you can see the rock slide through the trees.
I left the Appalachian Trail to visit the rock slide, and this is how it appeared as I looked up.
