Appalachian Trail ... Hiking the Maryland Challenge ...
Ascending North toward Lambs Knoll
(Gallery Has Four Pictures)

Here the Appalachian Trail is climbing northward toward Lambs Knoll. One might be surprised at all the life on the trail. Below you can see some of that life that I noticed.

Here is a Fowler's Toad (Anaxyrus fowleri) who was hopping the Appalachian Trail.

This is a ghost plant (Monotropa uniflora), which is quite an unusual plant, in that it does not have chlorophyll in its leaves, and thus cannot make its own food. Instead it is a parasite of fungi that in turn are parasites of trees. It has many common names, which underscores the need for classification-based naming.
This Wolf's Milk slime mold (Lycogala epidendrum), grows on wood, like seen here, where it was growing on a log by the side of the trail. I find it to be attractive, and of course it has an important job to do, breaking down dead wood.
