History in Fox's Gap
(Gallery Has Two Pictures)

Hiking north on the Appalachian Trail, you'll see this monument to the northeast as you walk out into Fox's Gap
. This was one of the scenes of the Battle of South Mountain, where General Jesse Lee Reno led his troops to push the southern troops back out of the gap, and was killed in action.

After the war, his surviving men returned to memorialize his heroic death with this monument. They were evidently quite inspired by his leadership. There is also a street in Washington, DC named for him. The Battle of South Mountain was the beginning of the end for the southern armies.
