Appalachian Trail ... Hiking the Maryland Challenge ...
Woods South of Washington Monument
(Gallery Has Two Pictures)

Just south of the Washington Monument State Park, after crossing the road out of the park, there is a light and airy pine (Genus Pinus) grove, which provides a comfortable and open change from the usual "green tunnel" you see on much of the trail. Pines include many different species, and I just can't remember what kind of pines they were, I just remember how peaceful that pine grove felt.

Soon, however, I was out of the pine grove and back to the "green tunnel," which of course has a charm of its own, but can seem a bit repetitive after a while.
