Appalachian Trail ... Hiking the Maryland Challenge ...
Black Rock Overlook
(Gallery Has Five Pictures)

When you hike along the Appalachian Trail, this is the sign that you see attached to a tree, indicating the turnoff for the overlook, which is only a short distance from the trail.

This is view from Black Rock when I visited it one day, looking directly west.

This is the same view from Black Rock when I visited it one evening. My friend and I had hiked up the Thurston Griggs Trail then up the Appalachian Trail to reach it, hoping to watch the sunset, but unhappily it was cloudy in the valley, so the view was not too great.

These two guys were sitting on an adjacent rock outcropping to the south of Black Rock, enjoying a beautiful view of the south.

This Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) is patrolling the rocks for a meal. I see vultures near rock outcroppings a lot. Maybe they know something about the dangers of hopping around on the rocks.
