This is the altar set in the center of the Purgatory Chapel. On the walls behind it are two mosaics: on the left is death, and on the right is life preserved by faith.

Set in the front of the altar is a deep-relief carved in France, showing souls suffering in the flames of purgatory prior to being allowed into heaven. Above them the Virgin Mary intercedes for them, and angels on either side comfort them and bring them the fruits of prayers and sacrifices of their friends and family still on earth.
