Just north of the tomb of Jesus is the Saint Francis Chapel. Standing behind this altar is a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi holding a dove. Saint Francis is often depicted holding a dove or surrounded by animals, as he was regarded as being particularly gentle and kind, which the animals could sense about him.

The panel to the left of the statue depicts a scene in the life of Saint Francis, in which Jesus Christ appeared to him as a six-winged saraph angel, and Saint Francis received stigmata marks on his body like those received by Jesus on the cross.

The panel to the right of the statue depicts Saint Francis blessing King Louis of France and Queen Elizabeth of Hungary, who were lay followers, inspired by his message of spirituality.

This scene, mounted on the wall to the right of the altar, depicts Saint Francis gently overseeing the baby Jesus in the manger. Saint Francis is frequently depicted holding the baby Jesus, symbolic of his fostering the spiritual growth of the church of Christ.
