In the 19th century, passenger cars included a spittoon. So much more hygienic than the floor, don't you agree?
There was a time when mail rode the trains in mail cars. Mail was rapidly picked up and dropped off at each station on the line, and the mailman in the car needed to be pretty fast and pretty knowledgeable about each town on the line. Evidently, he also needed to be ready to defend the the sanctity of the mail by force.
Not surprisingly, there was a luggage car. The luggage needed to be tougher than a 2,000 pound gorilla to survive the trip.
An orange hopper car that can carry stuff that can flow, like liquids or grain.
