Experience the outside and the inside of the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue
(Gallery Has Two Pictures)
This is the front of the Synagogue facing Sixth Street NW. The synagogue is a small structure with ornate decoration. Inside the synagogue, the aron kodesh is immediately below the big round window seen here. The current entrance is located around the corner on I Street.
This is a 360 degree view of the entire sanctuary. You can see the aron kodesh (ark where the Torah is kept) up on the bima (elevated platform). The aron kodesh has a sliding wooden door in front of it and above it is the big round stained glass window. To the right of the bima is the south wall, to the left of the bima is the north wall, and further to the left is the back of the sanctuary. At the time of the synagogue's dedication in 1908 as Adas Israel Synagogue, the men prayed in the lower seats, while the women prayed up in the balcony. The round cupola set in the ceiling is exagerated in this picture.
