Saint Anne Chapel
(Gallery Has Three Pictures)
This is the shrine of Saint Anne, who was the mother of the Virgin Mary. Anne appears not in the canonical gospels, but in early Christian apocrypha, especially the Gospel of James. Her name in Hebrew would have been Channa, and her story of the birth of Mary closely parallels the story of the birth of Samuel the prophet to the biblical Channa.
These pictures show Saint Anne holding the infant Virgin Mary, both of whom have heavenly crowns on their heads. Note the rosary beads, with which worshipers have adorned the statues, in order to honor these saints.
