Garden Path Devotionals
(Gallery Has Five Pictures)
These garden statues depict Saint Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio. This is a story of how Saint Francis, directed by G-d, tamed a wolf that had been terrorizing the town of Gubbio.
This path-side devotional depicts Saint Anthony of Padua, holding a baby Jesus, symbolic of his fostering the spiritual growth of the church. This is a frequent art motif for Saint Anthony, who was famed for the knowledge of scripture expressed in his preaching, and the important place he held among the Franciscans in teaching.
This path-side devotional depicts Saint Jude the Apostle, also known as Judas Thaddaeus who was one of the original twelve apostles. He is frequently depicted holding a image of Jesus and with a flame near his head, symbolic of his having received the Holy Spirit with the other apostles. He was martyred by the Romans in Beirut, along with Simon the Zealot.
There were many these path-side devotional pedestal pictures that were mosaics or reliefs. The picture on the right shows a relief of the second fall of Jesus on his way to being crucified.
