On Assateague Island, driving east on the Beach Access Road from the bridge, you come to a marshy stretch of road, which I refer to here as the Marsh Road, before you get to the beach. The marshes are on either side of the road, and wild ponies, perhaps the most famous and iconic feature of the island, are often seen here, grazing quietly on the marsh grasses.
