Appalachian Trail ... Hiking the Maryland Challenge ... Plants at Lambs Knoll

(Gallery Has Four Pictures)

Ferns growing thickly on both sides of Appalachian Trail on Lambs Knoll

Ferns here are growing thickly on both sides of the Appalachian Trail, as they do in many places on the trail. I believe these are of the order Polypodiales, which comprises 80% of fern species, but I would need to look at them more closely to determine which kind of ferns they are.

Mountain Laurel next to trail

Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) like these is very common in Maryland mountains. The flowers come most often in white, but sometimes also in pink.

May Apples, Virginia Creeper, and Lady Slipper Orchid on Lambs Knoll

Here are several different plants growing near each other. The large plants with umbrella shaped leaves with six or seven lobes are May Apples (Podophyllum peltatum). The smaller plants with five leaflets are Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia). The spear shaped leaves at the bottom of the picture I believe are Lady Slipper orchids (Cypripedium reginae).

Unknown but attractive plant with leaves with spots

This plant has leaves that each have a dark spot; quite attractive, but I don't know what it is. If you know, please let me know.
